300,000 individual applications received via 'Gerak Malaysia' app

More than 300 thousand people have registered with the Gerak Malaysia app over the weekend.

Bukit Aman says of the total, a third had submitted applications for interstate travel, having been stranded at their hometowns since the MCO started.

The cops also expect the number of applications to increase significantly by May 1st, which is the deadline for travel permit applications.

Meanwhile, the Defence Minister says the actual travel dates have yet to be determined, as authorities are still coming up with the SOP’s to ensure safe and smooth journey’s for all involved.

No new fatalities for the second time

For only the second time since the MCO was imposed, Malaysia has reported no new fatalities from Covid-19.

Yesterday also saw just 38 new infections, continuing the trend of new daily cases remaining under a hundred.

A further 100 patients were also discharged yesterday.

Holistic approach best for tackling Rohingya refugees issues

Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri is calling for a holistic approach to the issue of Rohingya refugees, as there are many perspectives to the plight affecting the ethnic minority group.

The Minister in the PM’s Department in charge of religious affairs said this, amid the controversy surrounding the refugees, after one of their boats was recently turned away over Covid-19 fears.

Tham Hui Ying, executive director of Asylum Access tells us she understands the concerns, but there are ways of handling the matter more compassionately:

“There are international obligations that are non-derogable even if a country is in the middle of a pandemic. So assuming there were well founded concerns that those on the both have Covid-19, there are responsible and reasonable responses that the government could take, including quarantining and monitoring for 2 weeks after disembarkation.”

Hui Ying adds that the UNHCR and humanitarian aid organisations are also willing and able to support the government in helping the refugees.
