May 13, 2021
The country is facing a more challenging third wave of Covid-19 following the emergence of several new variants that have increased the infectivity rate of the
pandemic in the country.
The Prime Minister says the country recorded a surge in cases over the past few weeks, with Covid-19 positive cases exceeding 4,000 a day over the past few days.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says he expects the daily Covid-19 cases to pass the 10,000 mark in the next few weeks if nothing is done to prevent the spread of the new variants.
Malaysia reported 39 Covid-19 deaths yesterday, the highest number of fatalities reported in a single day.
The Health Ministry recorded 4,765 new infections.
It also warned that daily case numbers may hit the 5,000 mark by mid this month, in light of the festive season.
The Health Ministry has pleaded with the public to abide by Hari Raya SOPs to ensure the Covid-19 pandemic does not worsen.
The SOPs, which begins today, states that home and grave visitations for Aidilfitri are no longer allowed.
No Hari Raya visits will be allowed.
