PM: Herd immunity possible by year-end

The Prime Minister is hopeful that Malaysia can achieve herd immunity against Covid-19 by the end of the year.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says he’s been informed that vaccine shipments are being expedited, which will allow more Malaysians to be immunized.

The PM also defended the government’s decision not to impose a full lockdown, saying it is to avoid the near-total economic collapse that we saw last year.

On the topic of SOP’s, Tan Sri Muhyiddin acknowledged that the frequently-changing regulations can lead to confusion.

However, he says authorities need to be fluid with the SOP’s, to keep up with the ever-changing nature of the pandemic.

The Senior Minister for Security says the government will be acquiring 8.2 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine by the end of June.

More than half of this will be imported directly from China, while the other portion will be obtained thru the fill-and-finish process by a local pharmaceutical company.

The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry has announced a two-hour time limit for customers visiting retail outlets, including in shopping malls.

Meanwhile Sabah is taking an even stricter approach, limiting shoppers to just one hour for visits to malls, supermarkets, grocery stores and other similar premises in the state.

However, the Malaysia Shopping Malls Association feels it is impractical to enforce time limit on shoppers.

In a statement…it said that while it agrees that a time limit can help control movement, it would be extremely difficult for personnel to keep track of how long shoppers have spent at a premise.
