Najib begins his prison sentence

Aug 24, 2022

najib begins his prison sentence

Datuk Seri Najib Razak is now at the Kajang prison to serve his 12-year sentence.

He was brought there shortly after 6pm yesterday.

Security was also beefed up outside the prison premises to prevent any untoward incident.

It came after the Federal Court had earlier rejected Najib’s final appeal against his guilty conviction in the SRC International case.

The apex court ruled that the appeal was devoid of any merit…that the conviction was safe…and the sentence imposed was not excessive.

This made Najib the first former Malaysian Prime Minister to serve a jail sentence.

Meanwhile, his lawyer is not ruling out the possibility of seeking a review of the Federal Court’s decision to reject his client’s final appeal.

The counsel says he will discuss the matter with his team, before making a decision.

Malaysians will have to continue using face-masks, as part of efforts to control the spread of Covid-19.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah told the NST, we are not ready to drop the mask mandate just yet…clarifying that the status quo remains, for now.

He said this in response to Singapore’s recent announcement, that masks will soon no longer be mandatory in most indoor settings in the republic.

A further 11 Covid-19 fatalities were reported yesterday.

This brings the average number of deaths over the past week to 9.1…which is higher than 8.4 average for the past 30 days.

Meanwhile, new infections rose slightly to 2,722.

This was over 600 cases more than the previous day’s tally.

There were also more than 4,800 recoveries.

The Transport Ministry is working on a comprehensive action plan, to help ease the backlog of candidates waiting to get their driver’s license.

It has already ordered the JPJ to also look into the delays, which has resulted in wait-times of up to three months.
