PM: No Selective Persecution
Mar 29, 2023
The PM insists that the government does NOT practise selective persecution.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says in fact, authorities are investigating both government AND opposition lawmakers.
He did not not name the individuals being investigated, or elaborate on the type of investigations.
He adds that it’s up to the Attorney General’s Chambers on whether to prosecute the individuals.
---
Also, the government is studying a proposal to separate the public prosecutor's office from the Attorney-General's Chambers.
The PM says although many have agreed to separate the entities, the government’s current financial condition needs to be considered, since it’ll involve additional spending of 300 million ringgit.
---
In a related development, the government is stepping up efforts to keep enforcement
agencies transparent.
The Prime Minister this includes setting up an independent body, that will investigate
any complaints lodged against them.
He adds such an investigative body would cover not just the police, but other agencies
including the MACC, and Immigration and Customs authorities.
