Johor Floods Could Worsen

The number of flood victims in Johor is expected to rise today.

The state Fire and Rescue Department told The Star, this is because of the ongoing rain since last night.

Its anticipating more evacuees in Kota Tinggi – which has been one of the worst-affected districts there – while flash floods are also expected in JB due to forecasts of high tide.

Currently, there are around 7,300 flood evacuees in Johor.

The Social Welfare Department’s portal also shows that Pahang has more than 1,300 evacuees as of this morning.

In a related development, the Public Works Department’s disaster operations room has been instructed to operate until midnight seven days a week.

It has also placed several teams on standby to provide immediate assistance to repair infrastructure damaged by the floodwaters.

The Prime Minister is urging people not to politicize the recent corruption investigations into several high-profile individuals.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says stern action must be taken against offenders if there is proof of wrongdoing, regardless of their position or political affiliation.

The Economy Ministry is warning the public to beware of fake surveys about the PADU database.

It clarified that it is not conducting any survey on the new system and cautioned people against giving out personal information to unknown parties.

Elsewhere, a UK-based charity says 2023 saw the highest number of civilian fatalities or injuries caused by explosives in more than a decade.

The 122 percent increase was largely due to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the war in Ukraine.
