The Solution To Prison Overcrowding

Mar 22, 2024

home detentions are a good thing

The government's proposal to introduce home detention for certain inmates can help deal with the huge problem of overcrowded prisons.

Criminologist, Dr Haezreena Begum Abdul Hamid told us there were 70 thousand inmates inside prisons that can only handle up to 62 thousand people.

This makes it challenging for prisoners, as they must share cramped cells with several other inmates...

"They have to adjust it in a way that they can all fit in the cells and prisoners have to strategically adjust themselves so they can fit in the cells, particularly when they want to sleep", she said.

The government previously said that home detention proposal would only involve serving not more than 4-year sentences, especially those with special needs.
