House Arrest Bill Has Nothing to Do With Najib

The proposed house arrest bill has nothing to do with jailed former PM Datuk Seri Najib Razak.  

Govt spokesperson, Fahmi Fadzil says instead it is part of efforts to turn Malaysia away from a punitive justice system to one that is more restorative. 

He adds that it also aims to reduce the problem of overcrowded prisons.  

The house arrest bill, which will be tabled next year, will allow selected convicts to serve out their terms in locations such as their homes, care centres or worker dormitories.

Separately, Fahmi says its anti-cyberbullying measures will be tabled in the dewan rakyat during the current parliamentary meeting.  

This is after the Cabinet gave its provisional approval to a series of legislative amendments.  

They will, among other things, provide a clearer legal definition of bullying.  

The government first announced its anti-cyber bullying plans earlier this year, following the death of local influencer Esha.

A court in Penang has fined a woman RM4,000 for making up a story about being forced into prostitution by loan sharks.  

She made the claim on TikTok, alleging that she was forced to do so because of her fathers’ debts.

Perak police say will summon the organiser of a recent event in Teluk Intan for questioning, over the apparent display of Chinese flags. 

Meanwhile the organiser has issued a public apology, saying it was NOT a planned part of the event.
