WWF Wants More Protection For Wildlife

May 13, 2025

wwf wants more protection for wildlife

More needs to be done to prevent wildlife casualties.

WWF Malaysia is urging authorities to implement immediate measures to do so, such as the installation of speed bumps at key wildlife crossing points.

It explained that although existing signboards may serve as a reminder for motorists to slow down, these may not be sufficient.

This, following a heartbreaking incident near Perak over the weekend, where anelephant was seen grieving the loss of her calf, after a collision with a lorry.

WWF Malaysia adds that the incident is not an isolated one, and that the area where the accident occurred is a known hotspot for wildlife crossings.

In a related development, officials have revealed that over 2,300 wild animals were killed in vehicle collisions nationwide since 2020.

However, the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry says steps are currently being taken to address the issue.

This includes increasing the allocation for state governments to create more forest reserves and to build more elephant sanctuaries.

The Health Ministry says Malaysia has seen a staggering 266% increase in hand, foot and mouth disease cases nationwide so far this year.

Selangor recorded the highest number of infections, making up over 27% of cases.

The International Civil Aviation Organization has ruled that Russia was responsible for the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine back in 2014.

It found that Russia had broken international law on the use of weapons against civilian aircraft in flight.

The UN agency will now need to decide on what form of reparations are in order.
