Chini by-election sees six voters with COVID-19 symptoms
Jul 05, 2020
Six voters at yesterday's Chini by-election displayed Covid-19 symptoms, and had to be isolated.
They were refered to a treatment area at their polling center, and were allowed to cast their ballots there before being examined further.
Strict measures to protect against Covid-19 were in place during the by-election, which is the first to be held under the so-called 'new normal'.
BN's Mohd Sharim Md Zain won the Chini by-election, taking the state seat with a 12,650 vote majority over two independent candidates.
Drunk-driving law amendments finalised
The Attorney General's Chambers has already finalised several issues relating to amending existing laws to tackle drunk-driving cases.
The Transport Ministry says a draft, calling for tougher penalties for those who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, will go through the Cabinet first before being tabled at this month's Parliamentary sitting.
This came as a 25 year old suspected drunk driver was killed in Selangor, when his car collided head-on with a lorry after he drove against the flow of traffic along a highway slip road.
Cross-border haze unlikely to hit Malaysia in near future
Cross-border haze from Indonesia is not expected to hit the country anytime soon.
Currently, some 15 hotspots have been detected in Sumatra and Kalimantan, but the Malaysian Met Department says based on current wind direction, the haze should not be blowing towards us.
However, it warns that the cross-border haze could still set in by August or September, if open burning is not brought under control.
