Here's what to expect in today's Dewan Rakyat sitting

Jul 13, 2020

All eyes will be on the ruling government and the opposition as Parliament reconvenes today!

A motion for former EC chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun to be made Dewan Rakyat Speaker is expected to be tabled...

While a motion of no confidence against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin by former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is listed at number 27 on the Order Paper.

However, political analyst Dr Oh Ei Sun believes this is much ado about nothing...

"We follow the Westminster Parliamentary democracy system, whereby the government of the day would have a lot of say as to whether to actually bring up some agenda item of the Parliament. So, I think the current administration under Tan Sri Muhyiddin would not be too eager to bring about some of those motions.

This will be the first full sitting since Perikatan Nasional took over the federal government in March.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin attended a closed-door briefing with Perikatan Nasional MPs yesterday.

UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says all the MPs who attended the meeting have agreed to support all the motions to be tabled by the PM today.

Still on the matter, the Opposition has agreed to defend Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff and his deputy Nga Kor Ming if there is a motion to remove them in Parliament today.

Its leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says the decision is based on principles and the rule of law adding that in the past, a new speaker would only be appointed in the event of a vacancy- either through death or resignation.
