Datuk Azhar Harun is the new Dewan Rakyat Speaker.

The former Election Commission Chairman was appointed without a vote, leading to protests from the opposition.

He was appointed after the house narrowly voted to remove Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof from the position.

It was approved with only a two vote majority.

Meanwhile Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has been appointed deputy speaker.

Proceedings have been postponed until tomorrow.

Malaysia reports seven new COVID-19 cases

Malaysia reported seven new Covid-19 cases today, raising the total number of cases nationwide to 8,725.

But of this number, only 83 are active cases.

Meanwhile the death toll is unchanged, at 122.
