Jul 15, 2020

The government is moving forward with plans to amend the Road Transport Act, to slap tougher penalties for dangerous driving, including drunk drivers.

The Transport Minister says under the proposed amendments, repeat offenders can face a longer jail sentence of up to 20 years and a maximum fine of 150 thousand ringgit.

They will also have their licenses suspended for 20 years.

Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong adds that the law will also reduce the legal amount of alcohol that can be found in a person’s system.

The amendments are expected to be tabled during the current parliamentary session.

15% fee discount for public uni students

Students at public higher learning institutions will enjoy a 15% discount for hostel, administrative and activity fees.

The move is to help families that are financially burdened by the COVID-19 pandemic

According to the Higher Education Ministry, the discount will apply to those who are in their second semester of the 2019/2020 academic session.

Also, the ministry says it has taken measures to help varsity students who are unable to continue their classes online, due to reasons such as a lack of internet access.

This includes asking public universities to send the relevant learning materials to the students via post.

School students reminded COVID-19 isn't gone yet

Students returning to school for the first time this week, have been reminded to follow all the relevant SOPs.

This includes those who commute to school by bus.

The Education Minister says the COVID-19 outbreak hasn’t been eradicated yet, so everyone must do their part to contain its spread.

Classes resumed today for students in Forms One to Four, and those in Standards Five and Six.
