New Covid-19 cluster detected in Kedah

Aug 16, 2020

A new Covid-19 cluster has been detected in the Yan district of Kedah.

It involves four members of the same family, with authorities still awaiting test results on 76 of their close contacts.

The Sala cluster is now the country's 22nd active Covid-19 cluster.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Institute of Medical Research has detected a type of mutation in the Covid-19 strain involving three cases from the Sivagangga cluster and one from the Ulu Tiram cluster.

Health Director General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says this mutation makes it easier for this particular strain of coronavirus to infect others, especially if spread by the so-called super-spreader individuals.

Overall, however, he says the Covid-19 situation in the country remains under control, although he is urging Malaysians to continue following SOP's like physical distancing, frequent hand-washing and using face masks.

In  related development, 21 people were arrested on Friday for not wearing face masks in public.

Defense Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob says they were among the 129 people detained for violating the rules of the recovery MCO.
