Concerns raised over low number of organ donors

Aug 25, 2020

Waiting period for kidney transplants in Malaysia five to 10 years ...

The Malaysian Society of Transplantation has raised concerns regarding the low number of pledged organ donors, despite the rising number of patients.

Its president Datuk Dr Ghazali Ahmad informs us how long one needs to wait for a kidney for example.

"The wait for a kidney transplant from deceased donors for those in the top of the waiting list in the country, could be for as short as one year to more than 4-5 years depending on the blood group type. For those lower down in the waiting list , the wait could well exceed 5 years."

As for the new patients freshly added to the list, Dr Ghazali adds that the actual wait would theoretically take forever.

Fewer than 300,000 people are organ pledgers in the country.

As such, PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says he is leaving it to the authorities to investigate the Minister, as no one is above the law.

This amid public backlash after the Minister was only fined RM1,000 by the Health Ministry, for failing to follow quarantine SOPs upon returning from abroad.
