Obesity is a major contributing factor to diabetes.

This, as Malaysia is the most obese country in Asia with an overweight and obesity rate of more than 45.3 per cent according to the British medical journal.

Dr Juliena Mohd Zaini, of the Health Ministry, says the presence of fat on the body for example in obese and overweight patients will increase the risk of developing diabetes but not in the liver itself.

She adds the disease has become worrying as 17.5 percent of M'sians aged 18 years and above had diabetes.
