Couples wanting to adopt urged to be mentally prepared

Nov 30, 2016

The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has urged couples wanting to become adoptive parents to be mentally prepared before they take the plunge.

It says some couples return their adopted children when they find out the kids have health issues, with many of them then ending up spending years in orphanages.

There are also parents who are extremely choosy and would list out the skin tone, gender, weight or age of the babies they want.

It also clarified the adoption process in Malaysia has been simplified, and is not tedious as stated in Al Jazeera's "Malaysia: Babies for Sale" documentary.

The ministry adds, the misconception that adoption is difficult has contributed to baby trafficking.
