News Wrap-up: Toll abolition still in discussions, while DBKL offers special rate for traffic summonses

Aug 30, 2018

Talks to abolish tolls still underway

Talks to abolish highway tolls are still ongoing.

However, Datuk Azman Ismail, managing director of PLUS, did not give a timeframe for the relevant parties to reach a final decision.

His statement comes after the Works Minister yesterday reiterated the government's commitment to gradually abolish toll, depending on the country's financial situation.

SUHAKAM still hoped for OSA abolished

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia regrets the government's decision to keep the Official Secrets Act or OSA.

Its Chairman, Tan Sri Razali Ismail says this is because access to information is key to the democratic principals of transparency, good governance and the rule of law.

SUHAKAM adds that the right to freedom of information is also guaranteed under the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration, and many other international conventions that our government had promised to ratify.

This comes, after Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently said the OSA is still needed, adding that the law was only abused in the past, because the previous government did not follow the rule of law.

DBKL offers special rate for traffic offences

Now is the time to pay up, if you have outstanding DBKL summonses.

The KL City Hall is offering a special compound rate of as low as RM20, for those who have tickets for metered parking and traffic offences.

The special offer will run throughout the month of September.

Immigration Department to monitor migrants nationwide, with ending of amnesty program

The Immigration Department is planning massive raids nationwide, with the amnesty program for illegal migrants ending today.

According to The Star, the crackdown - which is the first under the Pakatan government - will begin tomorrow.

The illegals are aware of this, and have already gone into hiding, while businesses have voiced concerns about how the uncertainty over foreign workers could affect their operations.
