Malaysia's death penalty could be abolished

Jun 29, 2018

The government may abolish Malaysia's mandatory death penalty relating to criminal offences.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says for now, the government has deferred the sentence for drug-related offenders.

She adds that the review would enable Sirul Azhar Umar to return to Malaysia from Australia if he wanted to.

Sirul was convicted and sentenced to death over the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu.
