The police will work with the Social Welfare Department to provide background checks on childminders.
This follows a recent spate of babies and children dying of abuse at the hands of their caretakers.

The IGP says the incidents served as a wake-up call for the police.
The latest tragedy was the death of Baby Zara, who died after spending 2 days at the Serdang Hospital with signs of physical and sexual abuse.

Meanwhile, the DPM says the govt is still considering whether to abolish the death penalty.

On one hand, the govt wants to prevent innocent people from being wrongly sentenced to death, but it also believes the law can also be used to deter heinous crimes.
Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was responding to calls from netizens to keep the death sentence, following the Baby Zara case.
