Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye calls for decriminalisation of suicide

Jan 06, 2019

The government should review laws that criminalise those who attempt suicide, as they could be suffering from mental illness.

Mental Health Promotion Advisory Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, says instead of punishing them, these people should be given psychiatric treatment.

Lee has also urged the government to ensure that medical insurance coverage, could be extended to psychiatric disorders.

He adds that issues surrounding mental health must be addressed, including combating stigma on mental illness, especially among youth.
