Govt plans to swap highway tolls with congestion charge

Feb 24, 2019

The govt plans to replace the current highway toll system with a congestion charge.

Under the proposed system, highway users will have to pay 3 different rates depending on the time of day.

Normal rates, at existing toll rates, will be charged during a 6-hour peak period.

Meanwhile, motorists travelling during off-peak hours from 11pm to 5am can use the highways for free.

During other normal travelling hours, commuters will be given discounts of up to 30 percent.

The PM's Office says this new system will be introduced once the govt completes its proposed takeover of four highways in the Klang Valley, namely the LDP, SPRINT, KESAS and SMART Tunnel.
