MRT robbery suspect charged

A 26-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to assaulting and robbing a woman at an MRT station in Cheras on Valentine's Day. 

He was charged with voluntarily causing hurt while committing a robbery.

If convicted, he could be jailed for up to 20 years, and may also get fined and whipped. 

CCTV footage allegedly showed the suspect beating and kicking the victim inside an elevator at the station. 

The severity of the alleged assault triggered widespread outrage, and prompted authorities to revise security at all MRT stations.
