Massive fines mooted for environmental polluters

The govt is drafting a new law that will significantly raise the penalties for environmental pollution, following the toxic waste dumping in Sungai Kim Kim.

According to The Star, the new law suggests raising the fine for polluting Msian waters, to RM5 million.

Meanwhile the fine for open burning will be raised to RM100,000.

In addition, most pollution offences will also carry a maximum 5-year jail term as well as additional daily fines. 

The govt is also proposing a trust fund, to reward whistleblowers.

People's views will be taken into consideration, before a decision is made on the suggestion to reinstate travel bans on PTPTN loan defaulters.

The Education Ministry says currently, PTPTN is doing public consultations, on the proposal.

Reinstating travel bans was one of several ideas mooted by stakeholders, to encourage more borrowers to repay their loans.

Meanwhile, Berita Harian says another proposal is to bar the families of PTPTN loan defaulters from getting other loans in the future.

39 Malaysians trapped in Syria have contacted the police, saying they want to come home. 

Bukit Aman's Special Branch says two thirds of them are women and children currently located at a Syrian refugee camp.

The remainder are men who are being detained for alleged terrorist activities.
