Government steps up the fight against dengue

The Health Ministry has kicked off an initiative to release mosquito eggs infected with the Wolbachia bacteria.

The scheme, which is being carried out at 11 locations in KL, Putrajaya and Selangor, is part of efforts to tackle the rising number of dengue cases in the country. It will be expanded nationwide in stages.

It works by having the infected mosquitoes - which are free of the dengue virus -  replacing the local population of aedes mosquitoes so that they cant spread the disease.
