Tian Chua raises eyebrows on serving Batu

Tian Chua says he had never asked for Batu MP P. Prabakaran to step aside for him, and is instead looking ahead to the next general election.

However, the former two-term MP feels that he is better qualified to serve the Batu constituency, compared to the newcomer.

Chua had been deemed inelligible to run in GE14, which is when he endorsed the then-independent Prabakaran to contest in his place.

He subsequently took the Election Commission to court and won his challenge earlier this month, which means he's eligible again to run in upcoming elections.

Opposition MPs still skeptical on asset declaration

The Opposition is still against the mandatory requirement for MPs, their spouses, kids and trustees to declare their assets.

PAS Deputy President Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man says there is no reason why the spouse or child of an MP should have to declare their assets, because only the MPs are involved in Parliament.

He also reckons it will not be so easy to suspend a Member of Parliament who fails to abide by the requirement, because the matter will first have to be brought to the Select Committee.

The deadline for MPs to declare their assets, is next Thursday.

Penang court rules Jawi is part of BM

The Penang High Court has ruled that Jawi is part of Bahasa Melayu, and can be taught to Chinese and Tamil school students. 

This was in response to an earlier suit filed by Gerakan, challenging the government's decision to teach the Jawi script in vernacular schools.

The High Court, however, ruled that the implementation of Jawi classes was not in conflict witht he spirit of the National Language Act and provisions in the Federal Constitution.

Gerakan has yet to decide whether to appeal the decision.
