The Election Commission says Datuk Seri Anifah Aman can contest in the upcoming Kimanis by-election in Sabah.

This is because the former Foreign Affairs Minister is eligible and was not disqualified by any court decision on corruption or other offenses.

Yesterday, the Dewan Rakyat received a notice from the EC, on the vacancy for the Kimanis parliamentary seat.

The de facto Law Minister says a proposal on alternatives to the death penalty will be submitted in January next year.

He adds that the task force that was formed to look into this, needs more time to fine-tune its report before it is ready for Cabinet.

A Bill to repeal the mandatory death penalty is expected to be tabled in Parliament in March 2020.
