Give us something reasonable at the least

Dec 11, 2019

Malaysia is standing firm in its demand for reasonable compensation from Investment Bank Goldman Sachs over the 1MDB scandal.

In an interview with Reuters, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he would prefer an out of court settlement, but the offered compensation of around a billion dollars is too low:

"If they come up with a reasonable sum I think we will agree. But at the moment their offer is too small. We're continuing to talk with them to explain why they should pay for what we demand. Of course it's not the full amount, that they may be able to bring down, but we think that we can reach some agreement at a later stage."

Malaysia is demanding 7.5 billion dollars in compensation.

Tun M to step down after next APEC Summit

The Prime Minister has finally given a more concrete timeline for when he's stepping down.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said in a Reuters interview:

"I made a promise to hand over, I will. Excepting that I thought that a change immediately before the APEC summit would be disruptive."

The APEC summit will be held in Malaysia next November.

Tun M was serving his first tenure as Prime Minister the first time APEC was held in Malaysia back in 1998.

Be wary of polio

3 in 4 people infected with polio will not show symptoms.

A Health Ministry specialist said only 1 in 4 patients will experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and headaches.

She also emphasised the only way to fight polio is through vaccination, as there is no cure.

Polio returned to Malaysia 27 years after it was eradicated, after a 3-month-old baby boy in Sabah was infected.
