Govt can tap your phones under certain laws

It is legal for the government to tap telephone conversations.

Lawyer Dinesh Muthal shared with us that everyone has a right to privacy but some legislation allows authorities to do so:

"Section 116 C of the Criminal Procedure Code, Section 6 of SOSMA; interestingly this two particular sections were introduced to our Malaysian law during the tenure of our previous Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib himself. We have the Section 43 MACC act, we have the Section 27A Dangerous of Drugs Act and Section 11 of the Kidnapping Act 1961."

He spoke to us in the wake of shocking revelations by the MACC, who released several audio recordings of conversations allegedly between Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and several others in 2016 on 1MDB.

No toll hikes this year!

The government won't allow any toll hikes in 2020, in order to help manage living costs for the people. 

The Finance Minister says it will cost the government quite a bit to compensate highway concessionaires for the losses, but he didn't give the exact amount. 

However, he will reveal the figures later.

National Open Burning Action Plan explained

The government activated the National Open Burning Action Plan earlier this week. 

The Environment Ministry says it's to curb open burning during the tail-end of the northeast monsoon, during which there is a drop in rainfall

It will also step up monitoring of areas that are at high risk of fires, like peatland and waste disposal sites.
