No Ulterior Motive to Home Detentions

Mar 04, 2024

no ulterior motive to home detentions

The proposed home detention system for certain inmates is solely meant to help deal with overcrowded prisons.

The Home Minister has dismissed claims by some people, that it's for the benefit of certain individuals.

He recently said that the government has agreed in principle to introduce home detention for selected inmates.

It will be for those who are sentenced to jail terms of 4 years or less, and especially those with chronic illnesses, the disabled, senior citizens, and pregnant women.

He also assured that home detention prisoners will be monitored, with the help of devices like ankle bracelets.

Meanwhile a transparency NGO has urged the government to release a white paper on the home detention proposal.

It's to ensure the system is implemented transparently, while easing concerns that it could be misused.

The Education Ministry has assured parents that policies are in place to keep students safe amid the ongoing hot spell.

Its Director General says this includes giving students greater flexibility on the dress code.

This, ahead of the new school year, which starts next week.

According to MetMalaysia, only 6 areas in Kedah were under a Level-1 heat alert today, with temperatures of between 35-37 degrees Celsius.

And schools will not have any academic lessons during the first week of the new school year.

The Education Director General says instead, teachers should focus on fun activities that can encourage students to learn and instill good manners and morals.
