UPDATED: 10 Killed In Navy Helicopter Crash

Apr 23, 2024

updated: 10 killed in navy helicopter crash

The nation was left stunned following an accident involving two navy helicopters in Lumut, Perak this morning.

According to the Royal Malaysian Navy, the incident happened during rehearsals for its 90th anniversary celebrations.

Reports say the two choppers were flying in formation when they collided and fell to the ground.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri confirmed that all 10 people on board the two aircraft were killed.

Meanwhile another Navy personnel on the ground was injured after being struck by debris.

The Navy has since decided to cancel the anniversary celebrations, which were scheduled to take place this coming Saturday.

This was confirmed by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin, who also said that an investigation panel has been set up to determine the cause of the accident.

He also urged people to stop sharing viral videos of the crash, for the sake of the victims’ families...

This is a sentiment echoed by the MCMC, who said that posting disturbing or offensive content online is an offence under the law.

Those who have already posted the clips have been advised to delete them immediately.

His Majesty Sutan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia has expressed his condolences following the accident.

Meanwhile, PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described it as a huge loss to the nation.

Datuk Seri Anwar will also announce special assistance for the victims’ next of kin.

And the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry assured that it is ready to provide psychosocial support to the families.
