Countdown to Malaysia's Population Decline

Jul 11, 2025

countdown to malaysia's population decline

Malaysia's population is expected to start declining by the year 2060.

According to a Statistics Department report, our total population will continue to rise steadily over the next three decades before reaching a peak of 42.3 million by 2059.

It will then start dropping, for reasons including a greater gender imbalance and the country's aging population.

The report also projected a sharp decline among the Chinese community, and they are expected to only represent 14.8% of the population by 2060.

By that year, the Bumiputra population will account for 79.4% of the population, while the proportion of Indians is expected to see a slight drop to 4.7%
