Govt Considering Measures To Address School Violence

The government is considering several measures to address recent cases of violent incidents in schools involving students.

The government spokesperson says this includes increasing police presence in schools and allowing teachers to conduct frequent spot checks.

Datuk Fahmi Fadzil says there’ve also been proposals to ban the use of social media for kids under the age of 16.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister says the government is open to the idea of allowing teachers to cane students for indiscipline as long as this follows the necessary guidelines and SOP’s.

In a related development, metal detectors and expanded CCTV coverage will be implemented at the Bandar Utama school where a 16-year-old girl was fatally stabbed by a schoolmate this week.

The Selangor Menter Besar’s office says the metal detectors will eventually be installed at other schools in the state as well.

Separately, police have opened an investigation into a case in Shah Alam…where two Year 3 pupils are accused of assaulting a Year One schoolmate while at the canteen.

In other news…the government has stressed that there will be no city-wide lockdown in KL during the ASEAN Summit later this month…clarifying that there will only be temporary road closures at specific times and locations.

The Education Ministry says it’s new Character Development subject will be held over a one-hour dedicated weekly session for all primary and secondary schools.

And, Phase 4 payments for the Rahmah Cash Aid or STR will be brought forward to tomorrow, in conjunction with Deepavali.
