Police deny Malaysia is a hub for baby-selling syndicates
Nov 27, 2016
The police have shot down allegations that Malaysia is a hub for baby-selling syndicates.
The IGP says it cannot be denied that such activities exist in Malaysia, but it is not as prevalent and easy, as portrayed in a recent report by Al-Jazeera.
He adds that the police are constantly monitoring such activities and have stepped up efforts.
Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar says the cops will conduct further investigations concerning the claims made by Al-Jazeera, and take necessary action.
The documentary, based on a 4-month undercover operation by Al-Jazeera's journalist, alleges Malaysia has become a hub for baby-selling syndicates, with doctors and National Registration Department officers also in cahoots.
This, as the Health Ministry has also launched investigations on the doctors and healthcare facilities, that were reported to be involved.
The Ministry says action will be taken accordingly, based on the results of the probe.
This may include disciplinary action by the Malaysian Medical Council, which may lead to deregistration of the doctor from the Medical Register, and revoking the licence of the centres.
Meanwhile, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry is calling for procedures to adopt and foster children be made easier to counter illegal baby-selling syndicates.
It says the move would encourage couples to use legal channels.
