more than 22,000 displaced by floods

More than 22,600 victims are currently displaced by flooding across eight states.

Just under ten thousand of the evacuees are in Kelantan…with the remainder scattered across Selangor, Perlis, Kedah, Terenganu, Perak, Pahang and Penang.

This, as Kelantan identified its first flood fatality - a woman in a 4WD vehicle, who was swept away by a water surge in Gua Musang.

Meanwhile, a team of volunteers has managed to rescue around 300 Malaysians who were stranded by worsening floods in Hat Yai, Thailand...with efforts underway to bring more of them to safety.

The Foreign Ministry has also activated an operations room in Putrajaya, to improve coordination with Thai authorities to assist the Malaysians stranded there.

The Communications Minister has called for an immediate investigation into the assault on a prominent sports journalist in KL yesterday, stressing that the safety of media practitioners must never be compromised while on duty.

The Higher Education Ministry says just over seven thousand university students have so far benefited from the Siswa Sulung tuition-free scheme, which exempts eligible B40 students from paying tuition fees at public universities.

The Statistics Department says women’s participation in the local labour force has risen slightly to 56.5 percent while their average salaries and wages also increased to RM3,499.
