Another Trophy Slips Through Liverpool's Fingers

Mar 17, 2025

another trophy slips through liverpool's fingers

Liverpool have gone from potential quadruple winners, to being in the running for just one trophy this season.

This is after the Merseyside giants were beaten by Newcastle in the FA Cup final.

The Magpies beat them 2-1, thanks to goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak, while Federico Chiesa pulled one back for the Reds in injury time.

The result comes days after Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League, after losing to PSG in the last-16.

And last month, they suffered a shock defeat to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup.

However, Liverpool are still the runaway leaders in the Premier League title race.

They have a 12-point lead over second placed Arsenal, meaning that they will be crowned champions unless they suffer a spectacular collapse.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are celebrating their EFL Cup triumph like it's 1955.... because that was when they last won a major domestic trophy.

It was also a historic night for Magpies boss Eddie Howe.

He's become the first English manager to win either of the country's cup competitions, since Harry Redknapp's FA Cup triumph with Portsmouth in 2008.

He's also the first English manager to win the EFL Cup since Steve McClaren at Middlesbrough in 2004.
