5 English teams to compete in Champions League last-16 for the first time

Dec 07, 2017

For the first time ever, there will be five English teams competing in the last-16 of the Champions League in the same season.

This, after Liverpool booked their place as Group E winners, by thrashing Spartak Moscow 7-0 in their final group match this morning.

Tottenham are through as Group H winners, with a 3-0 victory over Apoel Nicosia, while Manchester City, who already booked their place in the knockout round earlier, fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat to Shaktar Donetsk.

They join Manchester United and Chelsea, who secured their places in the last-16 yesterday.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first player ever to score in each of his side's six Champions League group matches.

This, after he netted in his side's 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund this morning.
