Sudden ban of meldonium could prove fatal

Mar 10, 2016

According to the inventor of meldonium, athletes could die during sports events, as a result of being denied the drug.

Ivars Calvins told the BBC, the drug has been in the market for 32 years as a self-protective agent, and its sudden ban could prove fatal.

This, after tennis star Maria Sharapova revealed she tested positive for the drug in January, but had no idea that the World Anti-Doping Agency had banned it from this year.

The 5-time Grand Slam champion says she had been taking the drug since 2006 for health reasons.
