UEFA looking into plans to transform penalty shootouts

May 04, 2017

UEFA is looking into new plans to transform penalty shootouts, in efforts to make them fairer.

Instead of teams taking alternate turns for spot kicks, they will get 2 successive penalties, except for the first shot, which will still be decided by a coin toss.

This is to stop the team going 2nd from having to always, potentially, play catch-up, which puts them under greater pressure.

The system is already being trialled at the European Under-17 Championship, which started in Croatia yesterday.
