Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for the first time in his international career…as Portugal slumped to a shock 2-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland in their World Cup qualifier this morning.

The Portuguese still top their group but will be without their captain for the crucial final game against Armenia this weekend.

In other selected results…Norway are on the verge of qualifying for their first World Cup in 28 years after a 4-1 win over Estonia.

Italy kept their qualification hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over Moldova.

While France officially secured their spot at next year’s tournament with a 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine.

In other news…Barcelona have confirmed they’re planning to erect a statue of Lionel Messi outside their home stadium, to honour their former captain and record goalscorer.

Former Man City, Inter Milan and Italy boss Roberto Mancini has been appointed as the new manager of Qatari club Al Sadd.

Mohamad Juwaidi Mazuki has taken the bronze medal in the men’s individual compound event at the Asian Archery Championships…which is Malaysia’s first compound medal in the competition since 2015.

And, South Africa plans to bid for the Olympics in either 2036 or 2040 as it hopes to become the first African nation to host the Games.
