Liverpool close the gap on the EPL leaders
Jan 24, 2022
Second-placed Liverpool closed the gap in the EPL title race with a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.
Fabinho converted a controversial late penalty to seal the win for the Reds, adding on to earlier goals from Virgil Van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The win leaves Jurgen Klopp’s side nine points behind leaders Man City, with a game in hand.
Meanwhile, Tottenham suffered their first league defeat under Antonio Conte – going down 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
It leaves Spurs in seventh – two points off the top four…while Chelsea remain in third.
In other EPL results…Arsenal and Burnley played out a goalless draw, while Leicester and Brighton drew 1-1.
Barcelona are up to fifth in La Liga…after a late Frenkie De Jong strike gave them a 1-nil win over Alaves.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid are four points clear at the top of the standings, after coming from behind to salvage a 2-all draw with Elche.
Man City are reportedly set for a battle to retain the services of manager Pep Guardiola.
The EPL champions have been trying to tie him down to a new contract, but reports say the Netherlands FA could move in, to tempt him with an offer to coach a national team.
Guardiola’s current deal with City expires in August next year…with the four-time Premier League winner yet to express his interest in staying at the Etihad.
We could soon see the end of the Lee Zii Jia-BAM controversy.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu is set to meet with the badminton governing body today, to help both sides find a win-win solution.
This comes after the BAM slapped a two-year suspension on Zii Jia, following his decision to quit the national setup and turn professional.
