Coronavirus Could Lead To An Expanded Premiership

Mar 15, 2020

The coronavirus outbreak could lead to there being 22 teams in the Premier League next season instead of the current 20.

It comes after matches were suspended due to Covid-19, with questions remaining about when the Premiership could start again, if at all.

There are now proposals that if the league does not resume - then leaders Liverpool should be handed the Premiership title, with no teams to be relegated from the top flight.

Instead, the top two teams from the Championship would be promoted.

Five teams would then be relegated at the end of the 2020/2021 season to balance out the numbers again.

Premier League officials are set to meet on Thursday to discuss their next course of action.

Meanwhile, UEFA is set to meet on Tuesday to discuss the fate of the Euro 2020 tournament amid the global coronavirus outbreak.

As it stands, its looking likely the event - which has been scheduled for June - will be postponed.

F1 is taking steps, too

Formula One could scrap its usual summer break to get as many races as possible into this year's calender.

The coronavirus pandemic has already forced F1 to abandon the opening four races of the season.

The young national shuttler put up a strong fight but eventually lost in three sets to former world champion Viktor Axelsen.

Zii Jia has had an impressive campaign in his first All-England appearance, beating the more established Jonatan Christie and Chen Long in his march to the semis.
